The Declaration for Equality in Education

About thirty of us met regularly throughout 2007 to distill from our own experiences in our children's schools and with the school system in general, the foundation of ideas on which to build a draft version of the Declaration.

The Declaration includes an analysis of four obstacles faced by parents. It also contains four proposals and action plans to reinforce parent participation in schools.

The creation of the Declaration is a collective endeavour; Parents in Action for Education wants to include the largest number of parents possible, from all backgrounds and neighbourhoods. On February 22, 2008, the Declaration was launched and sent out for discussion to groups of parents gathered in community organizations, grass-roots organizations and schools. During its voyage across Greater Montreal, we animated Discussion Circles to encourage parents to contribute their ideas and their experiences to enrich the Declaration till it reaches its final form.

In what ways can parents take their rightful place and participate in the improvement of our public schools?
